China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is rebuilding and running the Tanzania–Zambia Railway under a 30-year concession worth about $1.4bn, with the first three years for rehabilitation. A training centre and an operations control centre broke ground in Dar es Salaam in July 2026. Track, rolling stock and facilities will generate sustained demand for equipment and services.

ما الذي حدث

On 17 July 2026 the Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and concessionaire CCECC broke ground on a training centre and an operations control centre in Dar es Salaam. The control centre will run the roughly 1,860 km network across Tanzania and Zambia; the training centre, supported by the Chinese government, will build local operating and maintenance skills.

In April, Sun Liqiang, vice president of CCECC's parent China Railway Construction Corporation, said during a visit that the programme would be delivered within the agreed three-year timeframe and that survey and design work was nearly complete.

الخلفية

According to figures TAZARA released earlier, CCECC plans to invest more than $1.4bn: about $1.0bn for full track rehabilitation and about $0.4bn for 32 new locomotives and 762 new wagons. The concession runs 30 years, with 3 years of rehabilitation and 27 of operation, after which the assets return to TAZARA. These figures date from the negotiation stage; the final contract terms prevail.

The programme was formally launched in November 2025. CCECC has since mobilised equipment and technical teams and carried out detailed assessments of the track, bridges, culverts and signalling.

الفرص التالية

Demand during rehabilitation centres on rails, sleepers and ballast; bridge and culvert strengthening; signalling and telecoms; locomotive and wagon maintenance equipment; and stations and staff facilities along the line. Once service recovers, Copperbelt freight moving through Dar es Salaam port will drive demand for logistics, warehousing and handling equipment along the corridor.

رأي MOHENG

TAZARA is a landmark of Chinese-built infrastructure, and under the concession procurement runs largely through CCECC's own system. For Chinese equipment and materials suppliers the key is getting on the contractor's approved vendor list; for local firms the openings are in subcontracting, transport and logistics.

MOHENG has delivered equipment exports to Tanzania and works with a partner in Zambia, and can help companies understand customs, logistics and subcontracting on the ground.

المخاطر

  • African rail programmes often slip; the three-year rehabilitation period is the parties' target, and progress on site is what counts.
  • Exchange-rate swings and FX controls in Tanzania and Zambia affect payment for local subcontracts and services.
  • Copperbelt export routes are competing: the Lobito Corridor, Tanzania's standard-gauge railway and road haulage all chase the same cargo, so TAZARA volumes depend on tariffs and service quality.
